Dr. Mukesh V. Khare is General Manager, IBM Semiconductors and Vice President, Hybrid Cloud at IBM Research. He leads a global team of more than 2000 researchers who are re-defining the future of computing with technologies like generative artificial intelligence (AI), high-performance computing, and delivery via the hybrid cloud. His business and technical agenda includes semiconductors, AI chip design for accelerated computing, system architecture, and hybrid cloud software.
Dr. Khare has built and led collaborative research alliances that have achieved significant computing breakthroughs, such as the world’s first 7nm and 2nm node chip technologies. In 2019, he championed the formation of the IBM Research AI Hardware Center, and in 2023 was instrumental in a $10B initiative to create the first public-private High-NA EUV research center at the Albany NanoTech Complex.
As part of an ambitious project to bring leading-edge semiconductor manufacturing to Japan and serve a growing demand for AI chips, Dr. Khare is driving an initiative between IBM and Rapidus for 2nm chip technology towards mass production. Dr. Khare was instrumental in the implementation of IBM’s AI chip and software stack in both IBM Z and Power systems and is driving IBM’s AI hardware roadmap.
Dr. Khare serves on the board of the Semiconductor Research Corporation, which manages more than $100M in funding for university research, as well as on advisory boards for the Center for Strategic & International Studies, Purdue University, and the State University of New York. He is also an industrial advisor to the U.S. Department of Commerce and the India Semiconductor Mission.
Dr. Khare was the recipient of the Asian American Executive of the Year in 2021 and SEMI Sustainability Excellence Award in 2023. He is a recipient of an IBM Corporate Award, IBM’s highest technical award, for leadership towards delivering innovative technologies, and is an IBM Distinguished Engineer. In 2024, he was awarded the IIT Bombay Distinguished Alumnus Award in recognition of his exceptional contributions in industry.
Dr. Khare holds a Master of Technology from IIT-Bombay, a Doctorate in Electrical Engineering from Yale University, and has co-authored more than 100 research papers and patents.
