Today, GEM interfaces are not secure. Cybersecurity standard SEMI E188 allows GEM interfaces an exception to security requirements. GEM interfaces use the protocol defined in SEMI standard E37, high speed message services (HSMS). HSMS is a binary protocol built on standard TCP/IP communication. With no available security features, this means that applications on the same network can see the GEM message content. Sometimes GEM message information is considered intellectual property. With increased concern over cybersecurity, the GEM 300 task force is working on new standardization to allow GEM interface communication to be secure.
