Dr. Tuyet-Trang Lam Piel, known as “Snow,” is a Professor of Practice in the Fulton School of Engineering at Arizona State University.
She brings over 16 years of industry experience in media processing, AI software architecture, and hardware/software validation to her current role in academia. With a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and a career rooted in innovation at Intel, she exemplifies the bridge between cutting-edge industry practice and academic workforce development.
At Intel, Dr. Lam Piel led cross-functional teams in developing and validating advanced media technologies, including GPU drivers, firmware for HEVC microcontrollers, and neural network-based video analytics. Her work spanned multiple divisions—from Digital Home to Internet of Things—where she architected solutions for frictionless retail systems and privacy-preserving video pipelines. She trained over 100 engineers, supervised Ph.D. research, and authored numerous publications, including IEEE conference papers and a patent.
Now serving as Professor of Practice at Arizona State University’s School of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering, Dr. Lam Piel is deeply committed to aligning academic curricula with industry needs. She teaches core engineering courses and leads initiatives that prepare students for careers in microelectronics. Her leadership in organizing panels—such as the Women in Engineering event featuring experts from Intel, Microchip, and academia—demonstrates her dedication to mentorship and inclusive workforce development.
She also spearheads SHIELD USA, a collaborative effort between ASU and Deca Technologies to prototype advanced packaging substrates, directly connecting students with real-world semiconductor challenges. Her involvement in curriculum design ensures that students gain hands-on experience with emerging technologies and industry-relevant tools.
A Senior IEEE member and Phoenix Chair of IEEE Women in Engineering, Dr. Lam Piel is a role model for integrating technical excellence with leadership and outreach. Her completion of the IEEE/Rutgers Mini-MBA for Engineers further underscores her holistic approach to workforce readiness—combining engineering rigor with business acumen.
Dr. Lam Piel’s journey illustrates how academia can cultivate future-ready engineers by embedding industry expertise, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, and championing diversity in STEM.
